Xbox BIOS Mod / Upgrade

What is BIOS?

Pronounced "bye-ose," an acronym for basic input/output system. The BIOS is built-in software that determines what a computer can do without accessing programs from a disk. On PCs, the BIOS contains all the code required to control the keyboard, display screen, disk drives, serial communications, and a number of miscellaneous functions. The BIOS is typically placed in a ROM chip that comes with the computer (it is often called a ROM BIOS). This ensures that the BIOS will always be available and will not be damaged by disk failures. It also makes it possible for a computer to boot itself. Because RAM is faster than ROM, though, many computer manufacturers design systems so that the BIOS is copied from ROM to RAM each time the computer is booted. This is known as shadowing.

All new PCs have a flash BIOS, which means that the BIOS has been recorded on a flash memory chip, which can be updated if necessary.

The PC BIOS is fairly standardized, so all PCs are similar at this level (although there are different BIOS versions). Additional DOS functions are usually added through software modules. This means you can upgrade to a newer version of DOS without changing the BIOS.

PC BIOSes that can handle Plug-and-Play (PnP) devices are known as PnP BIOSes, or PnP-aware BIOSes. These BIOSes are always implemented with flash memory rather than ROM.

Why BIOS Mod on an Xbox?

An Xbox is essentially a specially-designed PC in a small box. A BIOS chip is built on the Xbox motherboard. However, the Xbox is designed in such a way that it does not allow easy upgrade or modification to the BIOS...until now.

Once the BIOS is upgraded, you can start customizing your Xbox to suite your needs. The options are almost endless. First and foremost, you can replace the factory 8GB hard drive with a 120GB hard drive; then you can backup over 80 of your games to the hard drive on the Xbox and play the games directly from the hard drive without the game DVD, install arcade emulators, install Linux operating system, store and play all your MP3’s on your Xbox, watch downloaded DIVX movies, play DVD’s without a remote kit, customize your Xbox menu screen, and many other cool options.

How Do You Do It?

This is a proprietary process. We'll open your Xbox and do the modification on the motherboard to upgrade the Xbox.

Notes: (1) Upgrading the BIOS shall void the original manufacturer warranty. We give 30-day warranty on the upgraded BIOS. (2) Once upgraded, there is no way to change the BIOS back to the original setting. An alternative solution on the market is to purchase a BIOS modchip to replace the original chip. That way, one can switch the original BIOS back on. We'll offer such a mod chip soon. (3) This item is created for people who want us to upgrade the BIOS but prefer to do their own hard drive upgrade. We do offer an option to do BIOS and hard drive upgrade together. (4) You are welcome to bring or send your Xbox to us. It may take 1-5 business days to complete this task. If you ship an Xbox to us, you must pay shipping both ways. Gamestron.com is not responsible for shipping damages. (5) If you are ordering a new Xbox, you can add this item to the shopping basket or choose the pulldown menu so that we can ship you a brand new Xbox with BIOS already upgraded.
